Russia has sent waves of kamikaze drones into Ukraine, in what Kiev claims is the most intense drone attack since the start of the war. Many in Ukraine fear it could be the start of a long campaign of attacks aimed at destroying energy infrastructure, The Guardian reports .

"Kiev was the main target," Ukrainian Air Force Commander Mykola Oleshchuk wrote on his Telegram channel. The capital was attacked in the early hours of Saturday by about 75 Iranian-made Shahed drones, Ukrainian officials claimed, adding that 71 were downed.

Five people were injured in the rubble, including an 11-year-old child, the mayor, Vitaliy Klitschko, said. Several buildings, including a kindergarten, were damaged and about 17,000 people in the Kyiv region were left without electricity as a result of the strikes. Power was restored later in the day.

Ukrainian officials said the drones came from two different directions.

Residents of Kiev were awakened by an air raid siren around 2:30 a.m. and several waves of attack followed, with loud noises starting around 4 a.m. and again heard in the city center around 6 a.m. / CNA
