Albanians, second in the world for returns of irregular immigrants from EU

Requests for asylum in European Union countries from Albanian citizens continue to be high this year as well, although not at the levels of 2022.

But a large part of them are being ordered to return to their country of origin.

Eurostat reported that in the second quarter of 2023, 105,865 non-EU citizens were ordered to leave an EU country and a total of 26,600 returned to another country following an order to leave.

Albanian shetas are ranked second among the countries of the whole world that have returned after the order to leave.

According to Eurostat, Georgia (9%) accounted for the majority of returnees, followed by Albania (8%), Moldova (5%), Turkey (5%) and India (4%).

In total, compared to the same quarter in 2022, the number of non-EU nationals ordered to leave increased by 9%, while the number of people returned to another country increased by 29%.

Compared to the previous quarter of this year, the number of departure orders decreased by 5%, while returns remained unchanged.

Most of those ordered to leave the EU return to countries outside the European Union. The same situation is in the second quarter of 2023, where 76% of individuals returned to countries outside the union.

Moroccans and Algerians made up the majority of those ordered to leave EU territory in the second quarter of 2023 (8% each), followed by citizens of Turkey (5%), Georgia (5%) and Afghanistan (4%).

Data by country France had the highest number of orders to leave citizens with citizenship from a country outside the EU, followed by Germany (10,600) and Greece (7,095).

Previous Eurostat data revealed that for 2022, there were a total of 13,200 asylum applications in one of the countries of the European Union, the highest level since 2020.

Compared to a year ago, asylum applications increased by 16%.

For the entire 6 months of this year, asylum applications have been lower, reaching 3,535, a figure that is 28% lower compared to the same period a year ago./ Monitor
