Depopulation, at an alarming level/ 16% of Albanians are getting ready to

A survey conducted by the Balkan Barometer showed that 16% of the citizens surveyed in 2024 (1000 in total) declared that they are in the process of preparing to leave the country, leaving behind only Kosovo, where 20% of its citizens are trying to escape and on the same level as North Macedonia.

Serbia is seen to have the lowest level of citizens, about 6%, who are getting ready to leave the country through work contracts or other means of emigration. It seems that emigration is stabilizing in Bosnia as well. Also in Montenegro 12% are preparing to leave the country.

The Western Balkans has known strong waves of emigration in recent years, creating many problems in the countries' economies. Albania and Bosnia lead the way for the high rates of departure, but while in Bosnia there is a kind of calm, in Albania emigration continues to be a wound that keeps getting worse.

High emigration and aging population will lead Albania's population to decline without return in all scenarios.

Earlier in July, the United Nations in the new projections "Review of the World Population Outlook 2024" ranked Albania as the country with the largest population decline between 2024-2054 globally.

Also, the UN ranked Albania as the country with the strongest decline in fertility rates per woman by about 15% until 2054 globally.

One of the strategies that the UN recommends is that countries with a declining population should become inclusive, introducing into the formal labor market groups that have traditionally been excluded, such as women, the elderly and people with disabilities./ Monitor.al
