The Minister of Defense, Niko Peleshi, was asked this Thursday if compulsory military service will be restored in Albania.

Peleshi said on the show "Ditari" that Cyprus has other steps to take before starting such a discussion.

He emphasized that the government has prepared a law that will pave the way for the creation of a reserve force alongside the Armed Forces of Albania, which will be based in Elbasan.

"There is another step before we go to the opening of this discussion, which is the reserve force. In addition to the professional army we have, we lack a reserve force that we lack now. A reserve force that we lack now. We have drafted a law that will be approved very soon in the government and parliament for the creation of the reserve force.

Starting from the autumn of this year, we will have the first contingent of the reservist force that we are thinking of in Elbasan. Then, this number will go up to 2 thousand or 2200, the maximum predicted. The reserve force is on a voluntary basis, additional troops for 2 or 4 weeks where it is foreseen in different domains", emphasized Peleshi./ CNA
