Peleshi from Korça: Increasing pensions as a national priority for
The Political Leader of Korça District, Niko Peleshi

The Albanian government has launched a broad public discussion with pensioners to address a long-standing obligation and a legitimate demand for reforming the pension scheme. In this context, the Political Leader of Korça District, Niko Peleshi, during a meeting with Korça pensioners, emphasized that the increase in pensions is no longer a matter of indexation, but an essential reform that will use the opportunities created by the growth of the economy for the whole society.

In this meeting, where the General Secretary of the Socialist Party, Blendi Klosi, the Mayor of Korça, Sotiraq Filo, and the MP Eni Zake were also present, Peleshi emphasized that the government is considering a "substantial increase in end-of-year bonuses", to facilitate the daily financial burden of pensioners, benefiting from the country's economic growth. He mentioned that the main goal is "a stable pension scheme that will continuously guarantee higher pensions".

"In 2013, we found a mountain of debt and it took years to stabilize the country's finances. We couldn't find the money to pay the December pensions. With the help of the International Monetary Fund and through reforms, we managed to stabilize the economy and today we have the courage to talk about increasing pensions," said Peleshi. He emphasized that pensioners cannot remain excluded from the benefits of economic growth and reforms that have transformed the country. "We have doubled the volume of the national economy, from 12.7 billion euros to more than 25 billion euros, and this has given us the opportunity to make large investments and improve public administration salaries. It's time for pensioners to get what they deserve."

Peleshi underlined that the government is working for a deep reform in the pension scheme, based on the contributions of each one. He emphasized the importance of the fight against informality, mentioning that many businesses do not declare real wages, thus reducing the level of contributions to the social security scheme, which directly affects the level of pensions.

The General Secretary of the Socialist Party, Blendi Klosi, said that this meeting is one of many others that will follow, to start a dialogue with pensioners throughout the country. He underlined that the goal for Albania 2030 is to reach EU standards, guaranteeing a strong economy and more well-being for citizens.

"This is the first meeting of many others, to meet those who have really benefited less from the rapid development of the country," said Klosi, adding that the government's goal is that, by 2030, Albania reaches EU standards and guarantee a higher level of well-being for its citizens.

Meetings with pensioners will continue throughout Albania to further discuss the reform that aims to guarantee a decent pension for every citizen./ CNA
