Melbourne, Australia is deciding to ban scooters/ Veliaj brings them to Tirana
Erion Veliaj, the mayor of Tirana

Officials in the Australian city of Melbourne have decided to ban electric scooter rentals, citing safety concerns after hundreds of complaints and reports of accidents.

On Tuesday, Melbourne city council voted to end contracts with its two e-scooter operators, Lime and Neuron, giving them 30 days to remove their vehicles.

The Royal Melbourne Hospital published a report in December 2023 citing 256 e-scooter-related injuries, urging the state to take measures to ensure the safety of e-scooter users.

Paris, once one of the biggest e-scooter cities in Europe, voted to ban e-scooters for rent in 2023.

Copenhagen banned them in 2020, then reintroduced them the following year, but with strict new rules. Barcelona has partially banned them in historic parts of the city since 2016.

But these reports and decisions of developed countries do not seem to impress the mayor Erion Veliaj, who brought the scooters a few weeks ago to Tirana.

The streets of the capital, which are blocked by traffic most of the time and without any lanes dedicated to scooters, do not prevent Veliaj from calling the behavior of electric scooters an innovation, while the world is seeing them as a danger to the lives of citizens seeing the increase in the number of accidents from these vehicles./ CNA
