Belarus would be willing to use nuclear weapons given by close ally Russia in the face of foreign "aggression", President Alexander Lukashenko said on Thursday, as tensions rise around the country's borders with NATO countries.
Minsk has played a key role in Russia's war in Ukraine, with Moscow using Belarus as one of its launching points for an invasion as early as 2022, while joint Russian-Belarusian military exercises over the past year have fueled concerns that Belarusian troops may join Russian forces in the conflict.
According to Russian President Vladimir Putin, in June, Russian nuclear warheads were reportedly handed over to Belarus for "prevention".
In an interview with the state-run Belta news agency, Lukashenko claimed that Belarus "would never get involved in this war" if the Ukrainians did not cross its border. But he added: " We will continue to help Russia, they are our ally".
He also warned that if provoked - especially by neighboring NATO countries such as Poland, Lithuania and Latvia - Belarus "will immediately respond with everything we have", including nuclear weapons./ CNA
