"Hide the receipt of $225,000 from a former Albanian official"/

A report compiled by the US Department of Justice shares details from a detailed administrative investigation, following a criminal investigation of Charles McGonigal, a former senior official of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

In January 2023, the Department unsealed two indictments against McGonigal. In one case prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia, a jury charged McGonigal with concealing the receipt of $225,000 in cash from an Albanian national with ties to the Albanian government.

During this time, McGonigal served as a special agent and falsely reported aspects of his overseas travel and his overseas contacts.

The indictment further accused McGonigal of failing to disclose his meetings, while serving as an agent, with the business associate of the individuals named in the case, who was described in the indictment as a former senior Albanian government official and an employee of a “Chinese energy conglomerate.”
In September 2023, McGonigal pleaded guilty in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia to this act. /CNA
