Fear of facing justice/ Veliaj avoids GJKKO, recourse to the Supreme Court on

The arrested mayor of Tirana on 13 charges for 5 serious criminal offenses, Erion Veliaj, has launched a new legal battle in the High Court, where, through an officially submitted appeal, he is requesting a change in the security measure against him.

The request, filed on May 6, aims to overturn the "prison arrest" measure and replace it with a milder measure, such as a financial guarantee or the obligation to appear periodically.

The Supreme Court will review on May 28 the appeal filed by the arrested mayor Erion Veliaj, for the replacement of the security measure.

"It is requested that the security measure "Arrest in prison", provided for by Article 238 of the Criminal Procedure Code, be replaced with a milder security measure such as "Property guarantee" provided for by Article 236 of the Criminal Procedure Code or "Obligation to report to the judicial police", provided for by Article 234 of the Criminal Procedure Code", states Veliaj's request.

This move comes at a time when his stance on litigation is displaying a stark contrast and a strategy that looks like procedural play.

Veliaj has chosen not to appear in the hearings of the Special Court, where the criminal trial against him is taking place.

This systematic failure to address SPAK's serious allegations contradicts its very active presence in the Administrative Court.

In the latter, where the trial against prosecutor Ols Dados is taking place, Veliaj has not hesitated to go personally, turning the process into a stage for public statements and a media "show".

On the one hand, he seeks to ease the restrictive measures in the Supreme Court, but on the other hand, he avoids direct confrontation in the GJKKO, preferring the courtrooms where he intends to attack the prosecutor who investigated Veliaj./ CNA
