DW: Several countries in the Balkans are facing heat and fires

Hundreds of firefighters and soldiers are battling wildfires in several Balkan countries. Over the next few days, these places will be in the grip of a heatwave with temperatures reaching around 40 degrees Celsius.

On Monday (11.08.2025) according to the Albanian Ministry of Defense, there were a dozen active fires in the country, after nearly 40 fires broke out in the last 24 hours. In addition to firefighters, according to official data, about 800 soldiers have been deployed, as well as military aircraft and helicopters from neighboring countries.

In neighboring Montenegro, emergency services were protecting dozens of homes on the outskirts of Podgorica from the flames. The fire broke out in "quite difficult terrain to cross," the head of the Rescue Agency, Nikola Bojanovic, told reporters. Smoke was also visible in the hills above Podgorica on Monday afternoon.

In Split, Croatia, during the night and into the early hours of Monday, about 150 firefighters were on the ground fighting a forest fire.

The heat wave continues with temperatures around 40 degrees

The Balkans and the countries in the Mediterranean area have been facing extreme heat and forest fires since July. In Albania, since the beginning of July, according to the European Fire Information System (EFFIS), almost 34,000 hectares of land have burned. Police suspect arson in many cases and more than 20 suspects have been arrested.

The heat wave in the Balkans is set to last. In Serbia, Bosnia and Croatia, temperatures are expected to reach up to 40 degrees Celsius./ DW
