Draft Criminal Code/EU: Could affect freedom of expression and media

The EU has reacted to the draft Criminal Code. The European Union has expressed concerns about the impact that some of the proposals may have on citizens' rights, freedom of expression, and media freedom.

According to the EU, Albania should prioritize changes that are in line with the EU acquis and that address the interim criteria of Chapter 1, including:

Decriminalization of defamation, harmonization with European laws on drug trafficking, human trafficking, prevention of child abuse, firearms control, and the fight against money laundering.

The EU stated that this reform should be developed through an inclusive process, engaging all key justice institutions, civil society and media actors.

"We are particularly concerned about some amendments proposed by the working group that could have a negative impact on citizens' rights, freedom of expression and freedom of the media. These provisions are not aligned with EU standards," the European Union's response to the media said./ CNA
