Tens of thousands of people in Bulgaria protest against the government / Reason,

Tens of thousands of people protested in Sofia and several cities in Bulgaria yesterday evening, demanding the withdrawal of the new budget and the resignation of the government. This protest is considered one of the largest marches in recent years, where according to local media around 50,000 people were present.

Protesters chanted "Resign!" while two large banners read "Generation Z is coming" and "New Bulgaria without the mafia."

Protesters are demanding that the government fulfill its promise to withdraw the 2026 budget, which includes tax increases and additional social security contributions. Citizens have expressed strong dissatisfaction with corruption in the public sector, demanding the resignation of the government led by Rosen Zhelezkov.

Bulgaria, with a population of 6.4 million, is consistently ranked among the most corrupt countries in the European Union, according to Transparency International's Corruption Perceptions Index. Only Hungary ranks worse among the 27 member states.

Although the main rally in downtown Sofia was peaceful, tensions flared after it ended. Some protesters clashed with police, throwing stones, bottles and fireworks.

Garbage cans were set on fire, and a police van was badly damaged. Damage was also caused to the offices of the ruling party, as well as another party that supports the government. Police responded with pepper spray and arrested at least ten people, while two police officers were injured.

The country's president, Rumen Radev, condemned the incidents and called on both protesters and authorities to avoid violence. In a public statement, he called for the government to resign, stressing that the only solution was the removal of the current government and early elections. /CNA
