The EU will allow calls during flights

Travelers in the European Union may soon be able to use mobile phones while flying.

The European Commission has decided that airlines can offer 5G technology on planes, with slower data transmission.

This could mean that passengers will no longer have to activate "airplane mode" on their phones, although it is not yet known how the EC decision will be implemented, writes Euronews.

The deadline for EU members to make 5G frequency bands available to aircraft is 30 June 2023. This means people will be able to use their phones in flight - to make calls and used apps to stream music and video.

Britain's Aviation Safety Authority chief executive Dai Whittingham told the BBC that flight mode was important because of the lack of knowledge about how mobile phones affect an aircraft.

"There was a concern that the signals could interfere with automatic flight control systems. What has been established is that the risk of intervention is very small. The recommendation has always been that when boarding an airplane, the mobile device should be in flight mode, Whittingham recalled.
