Humanoid robots beat humans in Beijing half marathon

Dozens of humanoid robots made in China demonstrated their rapidly improving athletic skills and advances in autonomous navigation as they outpaced human runners in a half marathon in Beijing on Sunday, highlighting rapid technological advances in the field.

The first edition of the race last year was fraught with accidents and most of the robots failed to finish. Last year's champion robot clocked 2 hours and 40 minutes, more than double the time of the human winner of the conventional race.

Unlike last year, nearly half of the participating robots navigated the more challenging terrain autonomously instead of being guided by a remote control during the 21-kilometer race.

The robots and 12,000 men and women ran on parallel tracks to avoid collisions.

The winning robot, developed by Chinese smartphone brand Honor, completed the race in 50 minutes and 26 seconds, several minutes faster than the half marathon world record set by Ugandan runner Jacob Kiplimo in Lisbon last month.

Teams from Honor, a subsidiary of Huawei, took the top three spots on the podium, all with automatic navigation and world record times. Du Xiaodi, an Honor engineer on the winning team, said his robot had been in development for a year, equipped with legs measuring 90 to 95 cm (35 to 37 inches) to mimic the best human runners and the liquid-cooling technology used in its smartphones./ CNA
