Russian politician: Ban WhatsApp in state institutions

A Russian politician has said the use of WhatsApp should be banned for state workers as the Kremlin seeks to move away from Western technology during the war in Ukraine.

Anton Gorelkin, deputy of Russia's information policy committee, wrote in a post on Telegram that he does not advise anyone to trust the WhatsApp messaging platform, owned by Meta.

Gorelkin said Meta has worked closely with US security forces and warned that people's WhatsApp conversations could be of interest to them.

"I consider it necessary to impose a direct ban on the use of WhatsApp for official purposes by Russian state and municipal employees," Gorelkin wrote in the Telegram post.

Gorelkin said it did not matter whether the alternative application was owned by Russia or Dubai. The main thing, he said, was that the technology did not belong to a company that "openly participates in the information war against our country and is included in the list of terrorist and extremist organizations"./ CNA.al
