Vendimi fatal erdhi pas eliminimit befasues në gjysmëfinalet e Kupës së Azisë nga Jordania. Me koreanët që cilësoheshin si skuadra më e fortë e kompeticionit.

59-vjeçari fitoi trofe me Interin dhe Bayern Munich gjatë karrierës së futbollist. Por edhe Kupën e Botës (1990) dhe Europianin (1996) me Gjermaninë.

Si trajner ka punuar me kombëtare si Gjermania, SHBA, Korea e Jugut, por edhe klube si Bayerni, Hertha Berlin dhe Toronto.
