UEFA "shocks" the English club, expels it from European competition

Crystal Palace have been banned from the Europa League for the 2025-26 season for breaching rules on multiple club ownership.

UEFA has found that John Textor, the main shareholder of Palace, also has significant influence over Lyon, which is against the European body's regulations. The English club will participate in the Conference League instead of the Europa League. The decision comes after Lyon successfully appealed, which avoided relegation to Ligue 2 and won the right to compete in Europe.

Palace and its executives argued that Textor does not have decisive control, but UEFA was not convinced and decided not to accept late solutions such as the sale of shares.

The club will appeal the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. In the meantime, there is a possibility that Nottingham Forest could replace Palace in the Europa League.

UEFA stressed that the decision was based on its clear rules on the separate ownership of clubs participating in the same competitions.
