"Paris 2024"/ Russian and Belarusian athletes will be required to sign

The Olympic movement is still studying the conditions so that Russian and Belarusian athletes, excluded because of the war in Ukraine, can participate in the next Summer Olympics. As L'Equipe explains, a hearing on this topic took place this Monday at the Council of Europe in Strasbourg.

In the end, Francesco Ricci Bitti, the president of ASOIF (Association of International Summer Olympic Federations) stated that beyond the criteria already established (exceptions, for support of the war and contracts with the Army Rouge or national security agencies), interested athletes can sign a declaration of neutrality to reach the French capital.

A month ago, the International Olympic Committee recommended the return of Russian and Belarusian athletes to international competition, under a neutral flag and on an individual basis. Some international federations, including fencing and tennis, which allow athletes from aggressive countries, have had an abundance of athletes from these countries. Those of athletics, horse riding and basketball, among others, have always closed the door to them.

This Tuesday, Amélie Oudéa-Castera also described the upcoming IOC election as a "sovereign decision". "France recognizes and respects the autonomy of the sports movement," said the Minister of Sports, who also promised "to do everything possible" for Ukrainian athletes to be at their best in Paris, thanks to the aid of one million euros that will allow "full coverage" of the base camp of the Ukrainian Olympic delegation.
