Rigged matches and arrests, Brazilian football is shaken

2023-04-19 18:09:57, Sport CNA

Rigged matches, arrest warrants and surprise checks. Brazil risks being involved in a scandal, for which it has launched an investigation.

The prosecution, as "Globoesporte" reports, has advanced investigations into the suspicions of manipulation of the results in the six matches of "Brasileirao 2022".

An operation has been launched to implement three preventive arrest warrants and twenty other search warrants. The operation covers six states and sixteen cities.

Nine players are involved and, according to what "Globoesporte" has learned, four of them are: Victor Ramos (Chapecoense defender), Igor Carius (Sport Recife full-back), Gabriel Tota (midfielder Ypiranga-RS, ex Juventude) and Kevin Lomonaco (Bragantino defender).

The fixed matches have not been revealed, but suspicions lie in six Serie A 2022 matches and other matches in the state championships of Goia, Rio Grande do Sul, Mato Grosso and Sao Paulo.

Investigations into Series A began in February this year. They were initially focused on some challenges of Serie B 2022, and then spread like wildfire to other competitions.

The players involved are said to have been bribed by a criminal group with offers ranging from 50,000 reais (9,170 euros) to 100,000 reais (18,340 euros) to perform specific actions during matches (number of fouls and corners taken, cards yellow etc.).

These practices are known to have brought huge profits to various betting sites.

Operation Penalidade Maxima II was officially launched at the end of 2022, after Vila Nova midfielder Romario allegedly accepted an offer of 150,000 reais (€27,510) to incur a penalty in a match against Sport Recife in Serie B.

Suspicions have now been confirmed that these machinations have reached the highest level of the Brazilian football pyramid: the green and gold football is shaking.
