Heading the championship, the big European club risks heavy punishment for match-fixing

One of Portugal's biggest clubs, Benfica is under investigation for match-fixing.

The allegations, as revealed by the Portuguese press, relate to the period 2016-2020 and involved all members of the club's board from that period onwards.

It comes just a year and a half after Benfica's long-time president Luis Filipe Vieira was forced to resign after being arrested on charges related to tax evasion, serious fraud, forgery and money laundering.

Part of the charges brought against him saw him accused of embezzling funds, along with another defendant, totaling around £2m.

The investigation is said to stem from prosecutors' access to emails, with the club said to have been accused of profiting from some fraudulent results in the period under investigation.
