The European Championship, UEFA's sensational plan to change the number of participating teams fails

UEFA seems to have backtracked and will abandon its ambitious plan to change the number of teams participating in the European Championship. The organization that runs football in the continent, a little while ago started a study to understand how many benefits it would have if the final stage no longer had 24 teams, instead of 32.

UEFA had increased the number of teams from 16 to 24 during Euro 2016 and planned to make the next possible change in Euro 2028. But its working group has concluded that this would render the qualifiers virtually worthless, a concern that came from companies buying TV rights who would no longer be interested in them.

According to the Daily Mail, the broadcasters had made it clear to UEFA that the qualification of 32 of its 55 member countries would make the qualifiers too predictable and it would not be profitable to broadcast the matches, with many of them to be useless. UEFA also considered the option to eliminate the qualifying groups, with direct play-off challenges and then the teams from the League of Nations that would complete the number of participating teams, but broadcasting companies and sponsors have been against this idea as well.

The final decision on abandoning the idea or not will be taken in November, at the meeting of the UEFA Executive Committee, but it is already clear that no one wants to increase the number of participating teams.
