He punched the referee/ The president of the Turkish club is arrested

The president of a football club in Turkey has been arrested after allegedly punching a referee after a match in the Turkish elite football league on Monday.

The president of MKE Ankaragucu, Faruk Koca, ran onto the field and hit referee Halil Umut Meler, right after his team conceded a 1:1 draw goal in the 97th minute against Caykur Rizespor.

Turkey's Minister of Justice, Yilmaz Tunc, said that Koca and two other people were arrested for "injuring a public official".

All Turkish football leagues have been suspended.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino said the incident was "totally unacceptable" and that violence "has no place in sport or our society".

"Without referees, there is no football. Referees, players, fans and staff must be safe to enjoy the game," he said.

Koca later announced in a press release that he resigned as club president and apologized for his actions.

"Regardless of how great the injustice was or how wrong [the referral] was, nothing can legitimize or explain the violence I used," said Koca.

Home team Ankaragucu had taken a 1-0 lead early in the Turkish Super League match on Monday, and then one of their players was sent off with a red card in the 50th minute. Caykur tied the score at 1:1 at the end of the match and it caused a huge commotion after the match ended.

After falling to the ground, Meler was hit several times while lying on the ground. He suffered injuries, including a small fracture to his face.

Meler, 37 years old, is one of the best referees in Turkey and he referees international football matches for FIFA./ REL
