Albania worsens by 4 places, ranking 57 out of 170 countries in the Social Progress Index* (SPI) 2023.

Of all the components, Albania has been evaluated with the most points in personal security and housing, ranking 39th in the world.

Good performance is also in terms of nutrition and basic medical care, access to basic education, access to information and communication, personal rights, health and environmental quality.

However, many of the components have deteriorated by at least 10 positions, such as basic education, health and advanced education.

As in the report of a year ago, the two components that rank us among the last places in the index are Personal Freedom and Choice and Water Quality and Sewerage, being ranked 130th and 94th respectively out of 170 countries included in the study. .

Albania ranks first in the subcomponents for gender equality in secondary attainment (no. 1), access to electricity (no. 1) and freedom of internal movement (no. 8).

The first place is led by Denmark with 90.38 points, surpassing Norway (the second place from the first a year ago), the third place Finland, Iceland in the 4th place and Switzerland in the fifth place.

As for the countries of the region, Albania leaves behind only North Macedonia, which ranks 60th, Serbia (46th), Montenegro in 45th place and Bulgaria in 43rd place. Kosovo is not included in index.

According to the Social Progress Index 2024, for the first time the world has declined overall in social progress. In total, 61 countries saw a significant decline in their social progress in 2023 and another 77 remained the same. Only 32 countries saw real progress.

Today, four out of five people in the world live in a country where social progress is stagnant or declining.

This decline is happening as we head into the biggest election year in history, with more than half the world's population, four billion people, heading to the polls.

With 4 out of 5 people in the world living in countries that are not making progress or falling behind in social progress, 2024 will be a crucial year where elected officials must be held accountable to address declines in health, education, rights and human and other essential areas that affect people's well-being. The findings indicate that the World Social Progress Index score fell by 0.31 points from 2022 to 2023.

The Social Progress Index 2024 also shows:

United States social progress has declined since 2011, and, as a result, the US has sunk to 29th place and second in world social progress.

The United Kingdom has also fallen in social progress since 2011. It has fallen 8 places in the ranking to be 21st in the world and has dropped to the second level of social progress.

Denmark ranks first in the Social Progress Index 2024, with a score of 90.38, while South Sudan is at the bottom, in 170th place, with a score of 25.93. Germany, ranked tenth with a score of 87.64, is the best performing country of the G7./ Monitor
