According to the World Health Organization, tuberculosis remains the disease that kills more people than any other infectious disease in the world, claiming an estimated 1.23 million lives last year.

Tuberculosis deaths fell by 3% compared to 2023, while new cases fell by 2%, according to the WHO's annual report. An estimated 10.7 million people worldwide fell ill with tuberculosis in 2024: 5.8 million men, 3.7 million women and 1.2 million children.

A preventable and treatable disease, tuberculosis is caused by bacteria that most often infect the lungs. It spreads through the air when people with tuberculosis cough, sneeze, or spit.

Last year, eight countries accounted for two-thirds of the world's tuberculosis cases. These were India (25%), Indonesia (10%), the Philippines (6.8%), China (6.5%), Pakistan (6.3%), Nigeria (4.8%), the Democratic Republic of the Congo (3.9%) and Bangladesh (3.6%).

The five main risk factors driving the epidemic are malnutrition, HIV infection, diabetes, smoking, and alcohol use disorders./CNA
