Children and social networks/ Halimi: Immediate disconnection will create
Psychology Arbilola Halimi

Social networks and the influence they have on the behavior of teenagers have been the subject of debate in Albania quite a few times, and recently, consultations have also started for the closure of the social network "TikTok", which is also assessed as harmful for the information it provides.

In an interview for CNA TV, psychologist Arbilola Halimi talked about Prime Minister Edi Rama's proposal to close social networks.

Halimi said that exposure to online content and mainly from social networks is harmful, as there are no proper protective mechanisms.

"There are some questions that need to be raised. First, the question is not whether it is a good or bad thing to disconnect from social networks, but whether it is harmful or harmless what contacts are created between children and these social networks. When we understand this, we will arrive at the answer whether closing social networks is good or not.

We have not yet built mechanisms to control or protect children from the contacts and content they encounter on social networks. We do not have ways and forms to protect children from the contacts they have on social networks and then to protect them from interaction with persons or materials, which would be harmful.

On the other hand, it is an issue that deserves discussion, because breaking away from "TikTok" or from social networks is not simple, at least in the psychological sense, since all the phenomena of psychological impact must be studied, the consequences that would cause in children.

Of course, we are in favor, because it seems that there are no strong control mechanisms to ensure protection from online contacts, but on the other hand, children are just as accustomed as adults to the use of social networks. Immediate separation would create anxiety and aggressive behavior," she said

Asked if the aggressive behavior comes only from social networks or if we should look at the situation even more broadly, including the education system, Halimi emphasized that all factors influence it./ CNA
