EU gives green light to vaccine for Omicron variant

The new vaccine of the company BioNTech/Pfizer is adapted to fight against the current variants of the corona, the President of the EU Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, wrote on Twitter. Previously, an expert committee of the EU Medicines Agency (EMA) had recommended the approval of the vaccine against the Omicron BA.4/BA.5 subvariants. The EMA announced that this vaccine is expected to offer broader protection against different variants of the corona.

Vaccination is recommended for persons aged 12 years and older. BA.4/BA.5 are subvariants of Omicron that are currently causing almost all corona infections in Germany.

The vaccine approved now is a so-called bivalent vaccine, which is designed to protect against both the original form of the corona virus, and the BA.4 and BA.5 variants.

All vaccines provide protection against Omicron

On September 1, the EMA approved the first corona vaccines adapted to the omicron variant. The two vaccines in question from BioNTech/Pfizer and Moderna were adapted for the omicron BA.1 subvariant.

According to data from the Robert Koch Institute, these variants no longer play any role in Germany. However, the hope is that the vaccine will also be more effective against the currently circulating omicron BA.4 and BA.5 subtypes.

So far in the EU, citizens have been vaccinated with corona vaccines that were approved about 20 months ago. Those vaccines also provide protection against the Omicron./DW variant
