DP, statement on the protest: Tear gas at headquarters and several injured

The Democratic Party has reacted through an official statement regarding a quantity of tear gas that was thrown after the protest inside the headquarters premises.

The DP emphasizes that several injuries have been reported by protesters.

The Democrats also accuse the Police Director, the Minister of Interior, and Prime Minister Rama of being directly responsible.

Full statement:

Large amounts of tear gas were thrown into the courtyard, premises and even the offices of the leaders of the Democratic Party, the main opposition force, a few minutes after the national protest of February 20, organized in collaboration with a group of independent intellectuals, under the slogan of the Civic Dialogue Forum, in commemoration of the toppling of the statue of dictator Enver Hoxha and the revolt over the corruption scandals of the Rama government.

Police forces have attacked the headquarters of the main opposition force after a peaceful protest, the second in the last two months, causing chaos, injuries and casualties.

Tear gas has affected and disrupted the prayers of Muslim believers who are on the third day of the month of Ramadan.

Several injuries are reported on the protesters' side, an act warned of by the police statement today, which avoided responsibility by saying that it did not guarantee today's protest, thus ignoring a constitutional prerogative.

The Democratic Party strongly condemns the violence used by the drug police, the injuries with rubber bullets, the use of tear gas, and the disrespect of the constitutional right to protest.

The Democratic Party holds directly responsible the director of the Police linked to criminal gangs, the Minister of Interior and Prime Minister Rama, whose order is behind this unprecedented police and political violence. /CNA
