The member of the Presidency of the Democratic Party, Grigels Muçollari, denounced this Saturday the loads of mandarins produced in Albania, which have been returned from several EU countries due to the high content of prohibited pesticides.

Muçollari raised the alarm about food safety, while accusing AKU, the Ministry of Agriculture and the government.

He also raised concerns about organic rice cream, a baby food that has been imported into our country.

The member of the Presidency of the DP stated that Italy has found arsenic content and has given the alert for the use of rice cream, but the AKU has reacted only after two weeks.

Full statement:

Despite all the concerns raised, despite all the denunciations, there is no improvement in food security, which is one of the most important elements in our lives. It is shocking that in the last few days large loads of tangerines produced by us have been returned from several EU countries starting from Croatia, due to the high content of pesticides, harmful to life. This happens because no one assists, monitors or helps our farmer. AKU does not exist.

Those tangerines containing these dangerous elements are certainly in our market and are being consumed even now as we speak. Why? Because AKU, the Minister of Agriculture and the government do not do their duty.

Chemical fertilizers and pesticides that are offered to farmers are not checked for their real content. There are not a few cases where farmers have implemented the protocols in a rigorous manner, but then the products have returned to the borders of the EU.

Albanian institutions do not exist.

Today we will refer to another case, which has to do with biological rice cream, baby food.

This is an import product introduced in our markets.

Italy has found arsenic content, and calls it very worrying as a case. On December 3, they gave the alert. This picture here shows it. They have announced about this risk. What does AKU do?

AKU reacts after two weeks. Our agency tells consumers and citizens to be careful, 14 days after receiving the alert.

So the product has unfortunately had enough time to circulate in every store, to be bought and consumed.

Meanwhile, we have other cases related to the content of sulfur dioxide in cinnamon and the presence of cadmium in imported spinach.

Both cases were reported by the EU in October of this year, while the AKU reported 1 month late.

So the products have unfortunately had enough time to circulate in every store, to be bought and consumed.

Who is responsible for these cases?

In the meantime, we do not know of any measure taken, any change, any reflection by the government, by the Minister of Agriculture, which directly depends on this sector, after many testimonies that we and the media have brought during this year about the failure of the AKU.

These are not only dereliction of duty, but worse, serious violations. They are abuse, misappropriation of duties that should be prosecuted and those responsible should be brought before the law.

Food security is as important as national security.

The Democratic Party will draw up a platform and will engage with all its resources so that food security is not lacking in Albania. We will do everything to have food security for our children, for our parents, and for every citizen./ CNA
