After a 10-year tour of some of the best museums in the world, a Roman period mosaic, preserved in very good condition, has returned to the place where it was first found on the outskirts of the city of Lod in Tel Aviv.
The 1700-year-old mosaic depicting a variety of animals, birds, fish, and ships belongs to the late Roman period. It was discovered in 1996 but until 2009 was not exposed for lack of funds.
The multicolored mosaic is 17 m long and 9 m wide. The owner of the mosaic is thought to have been a very wealthy merchant who traveled the world and saw all the boats and fish on display in the mosaic.
According to Israeli Antiquities Authorities, the mosaic may have served as the lobby floor of a palace in a wealthy Lod neighborhood, close to what is now Tel Aviv./ CNA.al
