Study: People who watch a lot of movies are more likely to be lonely

A new study suggests that binge-watching movies and TV series may not always be a harmless habit, but in some cases is closely linked to feelings of loneliness and social isolation.

According to a study published in the scientific journal PLOS One, people who show signs of addiction from binge-watching series are more likely to feel lonely, compared to those who watch a lot of television but do not show signs of addiction.

Researchers Xiaofan Yue and Xin Cui from Huangshan University in China analyzed data from 551 adults who watched at least 3.5 hours of television per day and more than four episodes per week. Of these, more than 60 percent met the criteria for addiction, which included obsession, persistently increasing consumption, and negative impacts on personal life, work, and relationships.

The results showed that only in people addicted to excessive viewing was a strong link observed between loneliness and this behavior, suggesting that psychological factors, such as the need for escape from reality or emotional enhancement, play a key role.

According to researchers, people who feel lonely may turn to movies and series as a way to avoid negative emotions or find temporary solace.

The World Health Organization estimates that loneliness affects about 16 percent of the global population and warns that social isolation is linked to serious health risks, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, depression and anxiety.

However, the authors emphasize that the study does not prove a direct cause-and-effect relationship and that further research is needed to understand whether reducing loneliness can help prevent addiction to excessive movie watching./ CNA
