Legendary designer Valentino Garavani/Founder of the fashion house

Valentino Garavani, the Italian fashion designer and founder of the famous Valentino brand, has died at the age of 93.

The news was announced through a social media post from Valentino's personal Instagram and his foundation, made on January 19, with the caption: "Our founder, Valentino Garavani, passed away today at his residence in Rome, surrounded by his loved ones. The funeral ceremony will be held at PM23 in Piazza Mignanelli 23 on Wednesday, January 21 and Thursday, January 22, from 11:00 to 18:00. The funeral will take place on Friday, January 23, at the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri, in Piazza della Repubblica 8 in Rome, at 11:00."

Born Valentino Clemente Ludovico Garavani on May 11, 1932, in Voghera, Italy, Valentino studied fashion at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne in Paris before serving an internship with Jacquega Fath and Balen.

He then worked for Jean Dessès and Guy Laroche before returning to Italy to open a fashion house in Rome. In 1960, he met Giancarlo Giammetti, who became his long-time business partner; they were also in a romantic relationship for 12 years.

 

Valentino, known for his signature red dresses, saw his profile as a designer rise after Jackie Kennedy bought and wore six of his dresses a year after the assassination of her husband, John F. Kennedy. She also wore a Valentino gown for her wedding to Aristotle Onassis.

 

One of his most notable pop culture moments was appearing in the 2006 film The Devil Wears Prada as himself. He was also the subject of the 2008 documentary, which was filmed over the last two years of his career and features appearances by Paltrow, Hathaway, Elizabeth Hurley and Sarah Jessica Parker — as well as his six beloved pugs./ CNA, translated by People
