Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong'o has opened up about her decade-long battle with painful uterine fibroids for the first time, revealing that she has had "more than 50" non-cancerous tumors and that for years she felt ashamed and alone.

Fibroids are non-cancerous tumors that grow in the uterus and can cause heavy and painful menstruation, abdominal pain, and lower back pain.

To expand treatment options without frequent surgeries, the actress has partnered with the Foundation for Women's Health, launching a research grant to develop minimally invasive, non-invasive treatments.
