NASA plans to place nuclear reactors on the surface of the Moon

The US space agency, NASA, is aiming for an even more ambitious goal of placing nuclear reactors on the Moon by 2030.

This new goal is expected to be achieved through the Surface Fission Energy Project, with plans to launch a medium-power reactor into orbit by 2028.

For this difficult task, NASA will have to join forces with the US Department of Energy and the Department of Defense.

"Nuclear power in space will give us the electricity, heat, and sustainable propulsion essential for a permanent presence on the Moon, Mars, and beyond," the post said.

The White House Office of Science and Technology has now shared new guidance for federal agencies to develop an action plan for space nuclear technology. /CNA
