Armed clash in Athens/ 12 arrested, including Albanians

Greek police carried out an operation this weekend, following investigations into the actions of gangs in Piraeus, Athens, which had an armed clash outside a nightclub in April 2024. Among the 12 arrested were Albanian citizens.

What had happened?

In the early hours of April 29, 2024, outside a nightclub in the Piraeus area, two criminal groups, consisting of at least 6 people each, initially clashed with each other with punches and kicks. They then pulled out guns and the gang members exchanged gunfire.

According to police officers from the Crimes Against Life Prosecution Department of the Crimes Against Life Sub-Directorate, the 12 arrested are accused of forming a criminal organization, attempted murder with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, breach of duty and violation of drug and weapons laws. A criminal case has already been opened. The 12 members of the two gangs were referred to the competent criminal prosecution authority.

According to the Greek police, most of the accused have criminal records for similar offenses. Therefore, in terms of fighting crime, the police ensure that the investigation continues.

Findings from inspections

As reported by Greek media, from physical checks and searches carried out at home, the following were found and confiscated, among other things:

• a pistol with a magazine containing 10 rounds,

• a revolver containing 6 cartridges,

• a self-loading pistol with one round in the chamber, along with the magazine,

• a hunting rifle,

• a number of cartridges of different calibers,

• 2 magazines and a pistol holster,

• 14 knives of different types,

• clothing used in armed conflict,

• a number of anabolic drugs and tablets,

• a pair of gloves with a bone front,

• 3 cars and a two-wheeled motorcycle,

• a quantity of cannabis, with a total gross weight of 2.4 grams
