The mystery of Sonila's murder in Italy/ The man forced her into

Italian media have paid attention to the case of a 21-year-old woman of Albanian origin who was found dead in March 2021 in an apartment on the outskirts of Turin. "Corriere della Sera" writes that Sonila Cani's death is still shrouded in mystery.

The suspicions are that the young woman was sexually exploited by her husband who was part of an Albanian network that ran a prostitution network in the Piedmontese city. The details emerged from in-depth investigations following a sting operation codenamed "Operation Mariposa", which last week executed 5 precautionary measures for people accused of crimes such as robbery or aiding and abetting illegal immigration.

16 people are under investigation for this matter. According to the prosecution of Turin, as reported by the newspaper "La Stampa", the girl may have been pushed to commit suicide. The investigations are being coordinated by the prosecutor Valentina Sellaroli. What happened that afternoon of March 21, 2021 remains a mystery.

Sonila called her parents after lunch. "She was happy as always," her mother claims. It was her husband who found her body in the bathroom. The boy slept in the bedroom. The prosecutor accuses her husband Kreshnik Cani of having a hand in leading the girl to self-sacrifice.

He told the police officers: "I was in the bar. I think she committed suicide." A month later he changes his story: "I think they killed him. She prostituted herself. They were angry with her because they thought she was spying on them in the police. 17 thousand euros have also disappeared from our house", he said.

The operation that led to the dismantling of the network began in May 2022 after the robbery of an Albanian prostitute. Investigations revealed a criminal system involving young women forced into prostitution in specific areas of the city such as Barriera Nizza and Madonna di Campagna.

The victims, all of Albanian nationality, according to what has emerged from the investigations, have suffered constant physical and psychological harassment. The girls were forced to hand over all their earnings to their exploiters and themselves lived in conditions of total subjugation, maintained even through manipulative emotional ties.

Among them was Sonila, found dead in the bathroom of a small apartment where she lived with her partner and her two-year-old child. This was also confirmed by the judge of the case, Francesca Pani, who partially accepted the prosecutor's request.

At the moment, her husband, Kreshnik Cani, is one of those being investigated. Cani is being investigated by the Turin Prosecutor's Office for incitement to suicide and exploitation of prostitution. The court said this has yet to be verified. Kreshnik Cani was also investigated by the Prosecutor's Office of Berat after a report made by Sonila's parents about the exploitation of their daughter.

"Sonila was the kindest girl in town. Best in school. She wanted to study. In Albania we could not allow it. Her dream was Italy. However, here she met her death. For 4 years I have wondered why my daughter is no longer alive", says Sosja, the mother of the young daughter.
