US Elections/Democrats keep control of the Senate, after victory in Nevada

Democrats will retain majority control of the US Senate after winning a key race in the state of Nevada.

Senator Catherine Cortez Masto is expected to defeat Republican challenger Adam Laxalt, who was endorsed by former President Donald Trump. Senate Democratic Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said the results showed the American people had rejected what he called the "violent rhetoric" of the Republican Party.

Democrats will now hold 50 seats in the Senate, with Republicans currently holding 49.

The remaining country, Georgia, will go into a runoff in December. If the Senate is evenly split between the two parties, Vice President Kamala Harris has the casting vote.

Republicans could still take control of the US House of Representatives as votes continue to be counted from a handful of precincts after Tuesday's election.

If Republicans win the House of Representatives, they could still block a large part of Biden's agenda./ CNA.al
