The Chinese Communist Party endorsed Xi Jinping for the country's leadership, giving him a third term in power.

During the party congress, which opened a week ago, many top officials - including Premier Li Keqiang - stepped down from leadership positions, a move that gives Xi the opportunity to name new allies.

The Chinese Party Congress is held every five years.

Delegates adopted a statement calling on all party members to "keep Xi Jinping in the key position of the party's Central Committee and at the head of the Communist Party as a whole."

Xi is expected to be reappointed as general secretary on October 23, after meeting with new members of the party committee.

This will allow him to win a third term as president of China.

In 2018, Xi overturned the two-term limit on the presidency, allowing himself to remain in the post. It was said at the congress that Xi is China's most powerful leader since Mao Zedong.

The new Central Committee announced that four of the previous seven members would retire. Among them is the current Prime Minister Li Keqiang.
