Vu?i? compares the situation in Iran to the NATO intervention in 1999

Serbian President Aleksandar Vu?i? said on Saturday that the United States and Israel's attack on Iran will have, as he put it, "far-reaching consequences on the world political scene" and that, in line with this, Serbia must preserve its freedom and independence, but at the same time strengthen its defense capabilities.

His reaction comes after the United States and Israel launched attacks on several cities in Iran. So far, there have been no reports of casualties.

US President Donald Trump confirmed the attacks and vowed to eliminate the "threat from the Iranian regime."

The Israeli military has announced that Iran has begun retaliating with missiles towards the state of Israel and several other countries in the Middle East.

Speaking to Informer television, a pro-government media outlet, Vu?i? said that "the main battle will be fought for the change of government in Iran," comparing the situation to NATO's intervention in the former Yugoslavia in 1999 and the overthrow of the regime of former Serbian leader Slobodan Miloševi?, who started the wars in the former Yugoslavia and led the country towards international isolation.

"All this is being carried out as it happened in Serbia. They lied all the time that it was a humanitarian catastrophe, while the essence was in two things - first, regime change in Belgrade and, second - the essence of the entire NATO action, securing the independence of Kosovo. So, this is an attempt to take full power in Iran and to orient Iran, as they would say, towards Western values," Vu?i? said.

During his speech, the Serbian president also mentioned the purchase of new air defense systems.

"I will keep the peace, but it also depends on how strong you are. We will provide extremely powerful systems. We are seriously considering this, we have multi-layered protection," Vu?i? said.

NATO's intervention in Yugoslavia was undertaken after the persecution and crimes of Serbian forces against the Albanian population during the war in Kosovo, which were confirmed by decisions of the International Court in The Hague.

After NATO bombing, the Serbian army and police withdrew from Kosovo, which declared independence in 2008. / Rel
