High temperatures have engulfed most of Europe in flames, burning thousands of hectares of forests.

Fires continue to rage across much of Europe amid a 'sweltering' heatwave with temperatures already soaring to 45 degrees Celsius and expected to rise even higher.

Portugal has been devastated by the many fires that have engulfed the neighborhood of Quinta do Lago where properties are sold from 1 million to 9.5 million pounds, which is also home to stars such as Roman Abramovich, Duncan Bannatyne, John Terry and Steven Gerrard.

High temperatures have also caused numerous fires in Spain, France, Turkey and Croatia. Spain's state meteorological agency AEMET said they expect today to be the hottest day yet, hitting over 46 degrees Celsius.

Most of Spain was put on high alert on Wednesday and AEMET said some regions such as Andalusia in the south, Extremadura in the southwest and Galicia in the northwest were the most affected. Across the border in Portugal, fires have destroyed regions, homes, businesses and golf courses.

One person lost his life as a result of the fires. In Leiria, central Portugal, locals have been scrambling to save the village as flames continue to spread. /CNA.al
