National crime rate in Germany to drop in 2025

The national crime rate in Germany fell by 5.6% in 2025 compared to the previous year, Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said at the annual presentation of the federal crime statistics report.

According to the minister, one reason for this is the legalization of cannabis, which reduced drug-related crimes. 

Violent crime fell slightly, by 2.3% compared to 2024, and thefts fell by 6.5%, DW writes. However, reports of sexual assaults increased by 8.5%.

As in previous years, the suspects in cases of sexual assault and abuse are mainly partners or former partners of their victims. About 98.6% of the suspects were men.

There were also more cases of child sexual abuse images than last year, partly due to the rise of pornography generated by artificial intelligence. /CNA
