The US destroys Houthi missiles and drones

The U.S. military said it destroyed seven missiles and three drones in areas in Yemen controlled by Houthi rebels, which it said posed a threat to merchant and U.S. Navy ships.

Iran-backed Houthi rebels have been attacking ships in the Red Sea since November in what they say is a sign of solidarity with the Palestinians following the start of the war in Gaza between Israel and Hamas, the Palestinian group declared a terrorist organization by the United States. US Central Command forces were acting "in self-defense" when they were involved and destroyed missiles and drones, as well as three weapons containers in Houthi-held areas, the command said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

The Houthi attacks have forced ships passing through the key Red Sea trade route to alter their routes, raising costs, in order to avoid the attacks.

The US and Britain have carried out continuous strikes on Houthi rebel targets in Yemen in response to the attacks on the ships./REL
