South Korean parliament impeaches president, suspends him from all duties

South Korea's parliament voted on Saturday to impeach the country's president, Yoon Suk Yeol, by suspending him from official duties over his short-lived attempt to declare martial law a week ago.

The Parliament voted with 204 votes for his impeachment and 85 against.

His presidential powers will be suspended until a copy of the impeachment document is delivered to him and the Constitutional Court.

The court has 180 days to decide whether to remove Yoon from the position of president, or restore his power.

If he is removed from office, elections for his successor must be held within 60 days.

Tens of thousands of people have lined the streets of the capital, Seoul, every night for the past two weeks, calling for Yoon's ouster and arrest.

The declaration of martial law, the first of its kind in more than four decades in South Korea, lasted just six hours, but it has sparked major political and diplomatic turmoil and roiled financial markets.

Yoon has been forced to withdraw the measure after huge parliamentary opposition.

Opposition parties and many experts accuse the president of rebellion.

He has been banned from leaving South Korea while law enforcement authorities investigate whether he and others involved in the declaration of war have committed rebellion, abuse of power or other crimes.

Yoon has presidential immunity from prosecution, but it does not apply when it comes to suspicions of rebellion or treason.

Yoon could be investigated, detained, arrested and sentenced for declaring martial law, but some observers suspect he could be arrested by force, due to the potential for clashes with the presidential security service./ REL
