Aid to Gaza arrives ahead of Egypt summit

Dozens of trucks entered Gaza from Egypt through the Rafah border crossing on Sunday, ahead of an Egyptian summit scheduled for Monday.

"The trucks, which will be inspected by Israeli forces before distributing the aid, carry medical supplies, tents, blankets, food and fuel," the Egyptian Red Crescent said.

Egypt said it is sending 400 trucks carrying aid, and the United Nations has said it has approximately 170,000 tons of food, medicine and other humanitarian aid ready to enter.

"This is enough basic food to feed Gaza's entire population of more than two million for almost three months," the United Nations World Food Program wrote in a statement.

Israel had blocked aid until now, claiming it was being stolen by Hamas. As a result of this blockade, the United Nations had declared a famine in Gaza and the international community had repeatedly called for aid to be allowed.

Over the past two years, 1.9 million Palestinians have been displaced from Gaza. Tens of thousands are now returning, but an estimated 83% of Gaza City is destroyed. The World Bank reports that about $50 billion is needed to rebuild Gaza.

Monday's meeting in Sharm el-Sheikh is expected to seal the final details of a peace deal between Hamas and Israel. Among those attending the summit are French President Emmanuel Macron, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and US President Donald Trump./CNA
