Kosovo Interior Minister: Organized groups and masked individuals attacked
Minister of Internal Affairs of Kosovo, Xhelal Sveçla

The Minister of Internal Affairs of Kosovo, Xhelal Sveçla, said that "organized groups with some masked individuals" attacked election officials and police officers in the north of Kosovo with "bang bombs and shots in the air".

On December 6, the Kosovo Police confirmed that several incidents occurred in Zubin Potok and North Mitrovica, at the time when the police were accompanying the electoral authorities in these two municipalities with a Serbian majority.

Police said there were suspected "gunshots and explosions".

The Central Election Commission said that municipal election officials were prevented from going to their offices in North Mitrovica and Zubin Potok to perform "official duties".

Sve?la called the attacks unacceptable, which, according to him, are aimed at blocking the election process.

"Organizing elections is a constitutional obligation, while participation in them is a right of citizens that cannot be violated by anyone," he said.

The four municipalities in the north of Kosovo - North Mitrovica, Zubin Potok, Zveçan and Leposaviq - have been without mayors since November, after their resignations.

They have resigned, as a sign of opposition to a decision of the Government of Kosovo to re-register cars with illegal Serbian license plates in the north.

The President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, has set December 18 as the date for holding elections in these four municipalities./ REL
