The government of North Macedonia has approved the decision to revoke the Macedonian citizenship of the Ukrainian oligarch, Oleksandr Onyshchenko.

He was granted Macedonian citizenship on May 31, 2021, based on his "clean record", at the proposal of the Equestrian Sports Federation, while the Agency for Youth and Sports, the Macedonian Olympic Committee and the National Security Agency gave a positive opinion ( ANB).

But the granting of Macedonian citizenship caused many reactions, since Onyshchenko is a fugitive from justice in Ukraine and is sanctioned by the United States.

Ukrainian oligarch Oleksandr Onyshchenko was a member of the Ukrainian Parliament in 2012 from the Party of Regions of former pro-Russian president Viktor Yanukovych.

After the change of the Ukrainian Government in 2014, he became a business partner of the then Ukrainian President, Petro Poroshenko, until 2016, when the Ukrainian Anti-Corruption Commission opened a case against him. After that, Onyshchenko managed to take refuge in Spain. But, since the Spanish authorities had decided to extradite him based on the international arrest warrant, he managed to take refuge in Germany, after the German Government rejected Ukraine's request for extradition./ REL
