Georgians protest against the nomination of the right-wing candidate for

The area around Georgia's Parliament building was barricaded on Saturday and traffic was stopped as opposition protesters gathered for large protests.

A large presence of police forces was observed in that area.

The December 14 march comes as the electoral college dominated by the ruling party, Georgian Dream, is expected to nominate the far-right ex-footballer Mikheil Kavelashvili as president.

The protests are a continuation of the marches that have been held after the parliamentary elections, held weeks ago, which the current president and the opposition believe were rigged.

Kavelashvili, the sole candidate for the position of president - a ceremonial position in Georgia - is expected to be elected through an indirect vote in parliament.

This 53-year-old is known for his anti-Western and anti-rights stances for the LGBTQ community.

Kavelashvili will succeed current president Salome Zurabishvili, who has a pro-European approach, and has joined opposition protests every day for the past two weeks.

Zurabishvili, who has become an eyesore for the ruling party and has criticized Georgian Dream for increasingly authoritarian positions, has said that she will not leave the presidency after Kavelashvili's inauguration on December 29.

"What will happen in parliament is a travesty - an unconstitutional and illegitimate event," she said during a press conference on December 13.

She has previously said that the parliamentary elections were manipulated with the help of Russia.

The political crisis in Georgia has erupted after the Georgian Dream claimed victory in the elections, while the crisis has intensified after the decision of this party to suspend negotiations for membership with the European Union until 2027.

Authorities have tried to violently suppress the protests, arresting hundreds of people in the past two weeks.

Violence against protesters and journalists has been severely condemned by the United States and the European Union./ REL
