Finland says a drone is suspected of violating its airspace

An unidentified drone is suspected of violating Finnish airspace in Virolahti, near the border with Russia, on the morning of May 3, the Finnish Defense Ministry said.

The Finnish Air Force spotted the drone in the early hours of the morning, the ministry said in a statement.

"The model and origin of the drone have not been identified," authorities said, adding that the aircraft is no longer in Finnish airspace.

The incident was being investigated by the Finnish border guard, the statement said, without giving further details.

Finland shares a 1,340-kilometer border with Russia.

The Russian Defense Ministry said on Sunday that military air defense units shot down 334 Ukrainian drones overnight in about 15 regions, some of them near St. Petersburg, about 150 kilometers from Virolahti.

In March, Ukraine apologized to Helsinki after two Ukrainian drones were shot down in southern Finland, likely deviating from course due to Russian interference.
