Violent and chaotic demonstrations in Turin/ Meloni: Protesters acted like

Violent and chaotic protests have taken place today in Turin, Italy. The demonstrations, which were attended by thousands of people from all over Italy and beyond, came after a few days ago, police evacuated and blocked the Askatasuna social center, a facility that had functioned as a cultural, social, and political space for almost 30 years.

Protesters threw fireworks and Molotov cocktails at the police cordon, while officers responded with tear gas. During the rally, street lights were uprooted, trash cans were burned, and an armored police vehicle was also set on fire.

According to Italian media, eleven officers were injured, one of whom was surrounded and brutally beaten by a group of masked protesters. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has also reacted to the demonstrations, describing the protesters as "enemies of the state."

"What happened today in Turin, during the march of protesters against the eviction of the Askatasuna building, is serious and unacceptable. A legitimate eviction of an illegally occupied building was used as a pretext to unleash violence, arson, firebombing and organized attacks, even attacking an armored police vehicle. The images of the attacked officer speak for themselves: we are not dealing with protesters, but with individuals acting as enemies of the state. Those who paid the price were the police, forced to face real urban warfare, and some journalists, attacked while carrying out their work. My full solidarity goes out to them, along with that of the injured citizens, who paid the price of blind and deliberate violence ," Meloni's reaction reads.

The protesters were joined by grassroots unions, associations, activists from social centers from across Italy and beyond, and even some politicians, including AVS deputy Marco Grimaldi. /CNA
