Chollet and Escobar today in Kosovo

The senior adviser of the US Department of State, Derek Chollet, and the US envoy for the Western Balkans, Gabriel Escobar, are expected to meet today in Pristina with the leaders of the Republic of Kosovo.

They are expected to hold meetings with senior officials of the Government in the late afternoon, while they will meet with the leaders of the opposition on Tuesday morning.

Their visit comes at a time when the situation in the north of Kosovo - an area inhabited by a majority of Serbs - is tense.

Some local Serbs there, as early as December 10, erected barricades and blocked the roads leading to the border points with Serbia, Jarinje and Brnjak.

Këto veprime i ndërmorën pasi Policia e Kosovës arrestoi ish-pjesëtarin e këtij institucioni, Dejan Pantiq, nën dyshimet për përfshirje në sulme kundër zyrtarëve të Komisionit Qendror të Zgjedhjeve në veri të Kosovës dhe atyre policorë.

Sulmet ndodhën derisa KQZ-ja po bënte përgatitje për zgjedhjet lokale në komunat veriore: Leposaviq, Zveçan, Mitrovicë e Veriut dhe Zubin Potok.

Zgjedhjet u shpallën pasi kryetarët e komunave dhe përfaqësues tjerë serbë u larguan nga vendet e punës në fillim të nëntorit, duke kundërshtuar një vendim të Qeverisë së Kosovës për të mos lejuar qarkullimin e makinave me targa të lëshuara nga Serbia.

Përfaqësuesit serbë, të mbështetur nga Beogradi zyrtar, i kundërshtuan edhe zgjedhjet, që fillimisht u planifikuan për datën 18 dhjetor.

Për shkak të situatës së tensionuar, presidentja e Kosovës, Vjosa Osmani, i shtyu ato për në prill të vitit të ardhshëm.

Autoritetet e Kosovës akuzuan “bandat kriminale serbe, të udhëhequra nga Beogradi”, për disa incidente me armë zjarri dhe shok-bomba që ndodhën ditëve të fundit në veri. Zyrtarët serbë thanë se udhëheqësit e Kosovës po përpiqen “t’i dëbojnë” serbët nga veriu.

Presidenti i Serbisë, Aleksandar Vuçiq, tha se autoritetet serbe do të bëjnë kërkesë te misioni i NATO-s në Kosovë, KFOR, që në përputhje me Rezolutën 1244 të Këshillit të Sigurimit të OKB-së, të sigurojë vendosjen e pjesëtarëve të ushtrisë dhe policisë serbe në territorin e Kosovës.

Rreth kësaj kërkese nuk pati reagim nga KFOR-i.

In an interview for the Voice of America, before the visit to Kosovo, Chollet said that the United States believes that the talks between Kosovo and Serbia on the normalization of relations will lead to mutual recognition between them.

After his stay in Kosovo, Chollet will continue his visit to Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Croatia and Belgium./VOA
