Bulgaria is among those countries that have refused to supply arms to Ukraine and are not actively supporting Kiev diplomatically. However, as Voice of America correspondent Tatiana Vorozhko reports, Bulgarians are helping Ukrainian refugees.
Yevheniia Serheieva used to live in Bucha, a town near Kiev. Just 4 days before the war started, she and her husband and 5-year-old daughter went on vacation to Budapest, Hungary. A few days later, she learned that Russian forces had bombed the apartment where she lived.
At the end of September, 136,000 Ukrainians benefited from temporary protection status, and about 57,000 of them continue to stay in Bulgaria, according to data from the UN refugee agency (UNHCR). Many of them have taken shelter in hotels, as part of a program financed by the Bulgarian government and the European Union that will last until the end of October./ VOA
